Umrah Charter Flights for Ramadan 2027: Planning Narrowbody Flights to Jeddah and Medina

Ramadan is the peak of the Umrah year. Millions of pilgrims travel to Makkah and Madinah in the holy month, and group organisers in feeder markets across Asia, Africa, Europe and Central Asia add charter flights to carry them. For Ramadan 1448, which is expected to run from around 8 February to 8 March 2027, planning is already under way.
Most first time charter organisers assume the hard part is finding an aircraft. It is not. The hard part is getting the programme approved and slotted in time.
The Saudi dates that frame the season
The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has published the calendar for the 1448 Umrah season:
Umrah visas and pilgrim arrivals opened on 31 May 2026.
The last date for issuing Umrah visas is 9 March 2027.
The last date for pilgrims to enter the Kingdom is 23 March 2027.
The last date for Umrah pilgrims to depart is 7 April 2027.
Ramadan itself ends around the same date as the visa deadline, so the sellable charter window runs from late January to late March, with the return flights stretching into early April. Always check the latest official announcement before you sell seats, because dates follow the lunar calendar and can move by a day.
Slots and permits come first
Jeddah and Madinah are busy airports in Ramadan, and every foreign charter operation needs approval from the Saudi civil aviation authority plus airport slots. For a series of charter flights, allow three to four months for the permit and slot process.
That makes autumn 2026 the real deadline for a February and March 2027 programme. An organiser who starts looking in December will usually find an aircraft and no approval to fly it.
Before you do anything else, settle two questions:
Who applies for the permits and slots? Usually the operating airline, working with a local handling agent. If you are a group organiser, make sure the operator you choose has done this before.
Which airport, and at what times? Jeddah and Madinah have different slot pressure. Flexible timings make approval easier.
Which aircraft fit an Umrah programme
Most Umrah feeder flights are narrowbody operations:
Boeing 737-800: commonly 186 to 189 seats in an all economy layout.
Airbus A320: commonly 174 to 180 seats.
Both reach Jeddah nonstop from most of the Middle East, South Asia, North Africa and parts of Central Asia and Europe. Longer routes need a technical stop or a widebody.
Pilgrims travel with more baggage than holiday passengers, and they bring Zamzam water home. Check the hold volume and the baggage allowance you can offer before you price seats. A full aircraft of pilgrims with heavy bags can hit weight limits on longer sectors.
How the flying is usually organised
An Umrah charter programme is rarely a single flight. It is a rotation: the aircraft flies out full, returns empty or with the previous group, and repeats every few days. Two things follow from that:
Empty legs are part of the cost. Unless the returning pilgrims from one group fill the aircraft on the way home, one direction flies with few passengers. Build that into your price.
The aircraft is often on ACMI. Airlines and tour operators without their own spare aircraft lease one with crew for the season. Our guide to wet leasing a 737-800 or A320 for winter 2026/27 explains how that works.
Punctuality matters to the Saudi authority
The Saudi authority watches the on time performance of Umrah flights closely and has raised concerns with carriers that miss agreed standards. For an organiser, this is a practical point: a delayed charter can miss its slot, and repeated delays put approvals for the rest of the season at risk. Choose an operator with a reliable record and enough spare capacity to cover a technical problem.
What an organiser should prepare
To get a firm proposal, send:
Departure airport or airports
Jeddah or Madinah, and your preferred arrival and departure times
Number of pilgrims per rotation and number of rotations
Dates of the programme
Baggage allowance you plan to offer
Whether you already hold slots or need the operator to apply
